In the body, the stress response is the key to wellness and longevity. Understanding how to take advantage of the stress response is vital for sustained health. It’s been said that “what doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger”. While you absolutely need to rest and relax a lot between experiences of stress, pushing the limits of the bodies mechanics of biochemistry can result in a more flexible metabolism and stronger physicality. We call that “exercise” and, as everyone knows, resistance training and endurance practice is a must for keeping the body healthy.

Other examples of the benefits of stress include “the hygiene hypothesis”, which asserts that exposure to microbes, viruses and other pathogens early in life makes the immune system more robust. Microscopic doses of sometimes poisonous plant molecules found in cruciferous and other vegetable supports liver health and strengthens the immune system. The exertion of walking builds stronger bones. When done correctly, the stresses of chemical peels applied by an aesthetician (applying fruit sugar acids to the skin) stimulates the production of collagen, hyaluronic acid, moisture molecules and creates healthier tissue and a more beautiful complexion.

It’s not just the body that benefits from stress. The psyche does too. If we hold up in the face of failures, emotional duress, breakups and bankruptcy, we’ll end up more resilient, capable and better able to handle the inevitable surprises in our lives more effectively and skillfully.
