With all the talk about vaccines and medications to fight viruses, it is easy to forget that there are lots of ways to block infections without drugs, vaccinations or anything to do with the medical model. Exercise, oxygenation and deep breathing potentiate immunity. Vitamin C, D, Selenium and Zinc are must have immune boosters.
What we eat is important too, for better or worse. Sugar has a suppressant effect on the immune system. Eating just three ounces of sugary foods significantly decreases the ability of white blood cells to destroy microbes. In fact, all processed and artificial foods can have a down regulating effect on the immune system.
On the other hand, veggies, especially the cruciferous ones and garlic and onions, contain important anti-bacterial and anti-viral compounds and should be enjoyed daily to protect against infections.
One of the most important immunity boosting foods is colostrum. Also known as “first milk”, this powerful immune strengthener contains a wide variety of active molecules, including natural immunoglobulins (a.k.a. antibodies) and a microbial destroying substance called lactoferrin that is especially protective against viruses. It can directly kill invaders, as well as indirectly protect the body by stimulating the immune system to identify, isolate and kill them.
Colostrum, which comes in capsules and powder, is readily available in health food stores or on the internet. Go organic, if possible. The best stuff comes from New Zealand or US cows that graze on natural grass and have an immunoglobulin concentration or around 30% or so.
