We all know that we need to eat right for good health, but, as it turns out, the order that we enjoy different types of food can make a big difference in how well we benefit from what we ingest. For example, even though it is traditional to start meals off with bread, it’s much healthier for our digestive systems to start meals off with a salad or some kind of fresh vegetables.
There’s several reasons for this. For one thing, starting off with veggies delivers fiber, which has a filling effect, that can act as an appetite suppressant and make it easier to reduce calorie intake. Secondly, if you begin your meals with the sweeter stronger more aggressive tastes of processed foods, the subtle flavors of plants will be less compelling. Thirdly, veggies are loaded with enzymes that stimulate bile, hydrochloric acid and other digestive juices.
When they hit our stomach first, they’ll facilitate the digestion of the enzymeless and sometimes dead foods that follow. There’s also something psychologically powerful with beginning with vegetables. You’ll find you’re much less likely to indulge in less healthy foods after you’ve given the body something you know is good for you.
