The brain emits electrical energy in waves or pulses per second (aka hertz or frequency). There are five major frequencies known as “gamma” (around 40 hertz or pulses per second), “beta” (15 to 40 hertz), “alpha” (8 to 15 hertz), “theta” (4 to 7 hertz) and “delta”, the slowest brain wave at 1 to 3 hertz. Each wave frequency is associated with specific states of being.
While under ordinary circumstances they’re emitted spontaneously, (gamma waves when we’re in a state of flow, beta waves when we’re focusing and problem solving, alpha when we’re relaxing, theta when we’re nodding off and starting to dream and delta when we’re fast asleep) it is possible to access specific states of being by intentionally activating brainwave frequencies.
For example, slow deep breathing and placing attention on respiration can slow brain waves to alpha, encouraging healing and relaxation. Intense focusing through the centers of the eyes can amplify beta brain waves and improve our ability to find solutions to dilemmas. Theta is associated with creativity and imagination and one of the best ways to get into this state is through a combination of muscle relaxation and visualization techniques. Cannabinoids are also known to improve access to the theta state.
To improve memory, well-being, natural happiness and get into what’s called “the zone”, you’ll want to leverage the gamma brainwave state. Meditation is an effective route here and interestingly, according to a 2017 study from Loma Linda University in California, eating nuts, particularly walnuts, pecans and pistachios can have gamma-inducing benefits.
